The In-Pit Extraction Process (IPEP) is an alternate bitumen extraction process that separates oil sands ore into coarse solids, fine solids, bitumen, and water. The process takes place at the oil sands mine reducing power needs and emissions. Emissions Reduction Alberta has committed $15M to the project on November 1, 2021. Front end engineering and design (FEED) of demonstration plant was completed in 2022, and is proceeding with detailed design of a 750 tonne per hour commercial unit for the demonstration.
