Dow is building a net-zero facility near Edmonton, in Alberta's Industrial Heartland, that will produce 3.2 million metric tonnes of polyethylene and ethylene derivatives. The project will also modernize its existing facility near Fort Saskatchewan to produce net-zero carbon emissions.
The project was announced on October 6, 2021. A positive final investment decision was announced on November 28, 2023 and construction began in April 2024. The project will support approximately 7,000-8,000 jobs during peak construction and approximately 400-500 full-time jobs once operational.
The Alberta Petrochemicals Incentive Program (APIP) will contribute approximately $1.8 billion dollars to the project. The federal government will be contributing up to $400 million from Canada's carbon capture, utilization and storage investment tax credit as well as the clean hydrogen investment tax credit.
Estimated cost represents the Dow facility, plus all associated infrastructure.
