The West Coast Oil Pipeline is expected to transport more than one million barrels of oil per day to Canada’s west coast and strengthen access to growing Asian markets, helping meet Alberta’s goal to double its oil production to eight million barrels per day over the next 10 years. The proposed pipeline runs through southern British Columbia, largely following the existing Trans Mountain pipeline corridor to a deep-water, Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC)-capable port terminal on B.C.’s southwest coast.
The project application was officially submitted to the Major Projects Office to be listed as a project of national interest on July 2, 2026. The goal is to achieve national interest listing by Oct. 1, 2026, and to obtain the permissions necessary for the design and construction of the pipeline to commence as early as Sept. 1, 2027. The project may attract $200 billion in direct investments in Canada and create 175,000 new jobs.
The project currently includes two main routing options, referred to as the Original Corridor and the Optimized Corridor. These routes generally follow the existing Trans Mountain pipeline system for much of their length, particularly between Wabamun, Alberta, and Hope, BC. Most of the pipeline would be located close to the existing infrastructure.
