Project Clear Horizon is a Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) initiative in southeast Alberta designed to create a regional hub for capturing and permanently storing carbon dioxide (CO2). The project aims to sequester CO2 emissions from various industrial facilities in the Medicine Hat area, including power generation and manufacturing plants.
As of February 2025, the City of Medicine Hat transferred the Carbon Sequestration Evaluation Agreement and a related contribution agreement from Natural Resources Canada to Imperial Oil.
Additionally in 2025, the Government of Alberta had announced an agreement to assign a carbon sequestration evaluation permit to Imperial Oil Resources Limited.
Imperial is currently conducting feasibility studies, including drilling appraisal wells, to determine if the geology is suitable for permanent CO2 storage. While a final investment decision has not been made, if the project is approved, operations could begin later this decade.
